ART AND MUSEUMS

Methodological subject of 4 credits
Professor: Marti Peran
Program of the subject:

POLICIES OF CONTEMPORARY ART. PRODUCTION MECHANISMS AND MANAGEMENT

the course proposes a simultaneous exploration of different areas that affect the contemporary production: creators, social and institutional contexts and the imperatives of the contemporary experience. These issues should be considered together to reflect on contemporary art. The practices are not autonomous from the demand and the ideological devices that determine them. However, it is also feasible to think about practices antagonistic to any predictability.

1. New forms of production and distribution New practises and the decline of the exhibition format Authorship and piracy within the public sphere
2. Transversality Movements of the contemporary art: the use value The scenario of cities.
3. Biennialization The value (and resource) of culture Global art and immaterial labour.
4. Curatorial practices Profile of the curator. Critical portrait Models of action
5. Critics and other literatures The construction of discourse. The institutional frame. Reading and Writing in the spiral of information.

ART, PRODUCTION AND POSTPRODUCTION

AGENDA:
a) work in the production phase:
- Process creation
- Selection Process

THE DOUBLE OF THE LIGHT: FROM REPRESENTATION TO PRESENCE OF THE IMAGE

Painting Department.
Professor : Alicia Vela. 4 credits.
Program of the subject: We are seduced by the presence of the image, by its optics, and by its analogical and numerical codification. To capture and to keep a record of data is our most immediate action. But if we are interested in art in its formation and its appearance, we will have to do also a work of reinterpretation and to preserve that surface that maintains an essential part of the image. The image as an apparition provokes a congealed retention. We are seduced. And every seduction implies a solitary action. This essential loneliness of which speaks Maurice Blanchot (The literary space) covers the very creative space of the artwork. This course will reflect on the modifications of language in the creation of digital imaging.

1. From a substrate of mater -pictorial or graphic materials -to the dematerialization of the matrix
2. The work of digital art: creative strategies
2.1 Symmetry, clonation: from the photographic image to the image as a reflection of a binary pattern
3. Digital image and printing

DISSOLUTION OF MATTER: LIGHT AND TIME AS THE DECONSTRUCTIVE ELEMENTS OF Art

Research program 4 crédits
Professor: Pilar Palomer.
Painting Department.
Objectives: theoretical considerations and formal analysis of systems of expression, technology and the media in contemporary art works that are generated from and beyond the orthodoxy of the language of painting-which, by their content, have a special impact on society, generate interest, texts and theories in currents of thought today (including a participation in conferences, seminars or some workshops run by a variety of artists / authors). METHODOLOGY This course is located between artistic practice and theories implicit in the creative act: a)Pre-production and work in progress b) Monitoring the constructive process, the processing of the images and the status that achieves the finished work. c) Confrontation of the artworks to the contemporary environment.

WRITINGS OF ARTISTS.

Research program 4 crédits
Professor: Carles Velilla
Program: METHODOLOGY: each student will chose a contemporary artist and study his writings, interviews, etc. in order to gaze a particular way of understanding the world and its place as creator. Some lectures will be given by the students. SUMMARY OF THE LECTURES after few days of guidance given by the teacher, students will present their chosen artist and start a reflection on the writings of the artist, which will be materialised through the essay format. CRITERIA AND EVALUATION SYSTEMS assessment will be done on a day to day basis through assistance, commitment to the subject and carrying out the work. DETAILS ON THE EXERCISES THAT HAS TO OVERCOME THE STUDENT The student has to build up a debate between the proposals of the writings of the chosen artist and his own proposal.

SPACES OF FLOTATION

EXTENSIONS OF THOUGHT IN SCULPTURE

Research program 4 crédits
Professor: Eulàlia Grau
Program: During the last decades of the twentieth century there have been established different types of relationship between sculptural activities and other disciplines or techniques such as architecture, literature, photography, video or digital imaging. The result of these "encounters" is the emergence of new conceptions of the sculptural space, the treatment of the environment, of virtuality, the participation of the viewer, and so on. The artists by breaking the barriers of specificity open the doors of the relationship and interaction between differences. Their ideas or emotions find thus new ways to become expressive and represent the flow and mutations that characterize our time.

URBAN IMAGES: DYNAMISM AND MUTATIONS.

Methodological   Subject: Research program 4 crédits

Professor: Pep Montoya Programme of the subject: The urban space as a source of research and knowledge. Relationships and interrelationships from the perception and use of urban space.

AGENDA:

1. The urban structure
2. The formal context
3. The communicative environment

OBJECTIVE:
The overall goal is to establish a connection between urban space, as a dynamic - mutable- element and the processes of research and artistic creation. The aim is to extract from this field, contributions that generate statements, attitudes and perceptions of influence in the artistic work. METHODOLOGY: This course arises from the practical and artistic contributions implied in the research on urban space outlined in the agenda. Within the art practice we will pay special attention in the analysis of: a) Suitability of systems and information extracted from the urban perception. The formal and technological supports used for the materialization of the artwork according to a conceptual and communicative quality. b) Follow-up of the constructive processes. Production (elaboration) of the images and situation of the artwork c) Confluence of the artwork in the contemporary.

LIGHT AND DARKNESS: THE PRINTMAKING BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOGRAPHY

Research program 4 crédits
Professor: Cristina Pastó

Program:

1. Vocation of the Chiaroscuro .
2. Visions and apparitions. The discovery of photography.
3. between photography and printmaking: photogravure, photolithography ...
4. From the photographic image to the digital image: New attempts. Content: If we analyse the history of representation we will realize that the tension between light and darkness has been a constant issue. This aroused artistic productions of all kinds: from a light and a dark painted or etched, to a representation heading towards a real light and darkness ... in a journey rich and vast that can be analyzed and questioned. The course aims to examine some of these aspects and to provide the necessary tools so that students can develop a personal artistic project.

WAYS OF SEEING: FROM THE ARTIST BOOK TO THE DIGITAL BOOK

Research program 4 crédits
Professor: Antònia Vilà
PROGRAM: Examining the artist book perceived as one of the most radical ruptures within the poetic art of the sixties until today, puts us in the dimension of creating another type of artwork provoked by the will to expand its potential into new narrative forms. The narrative strategies of contemporary art are articulated through ways of seeing that share a double sense:

1. A new creative potentiality of linking the new media with a continuous graphic art and photography.

2. The individual perception of these languages and its use as a creative process that modifies and interferes in them responding to the imagination of each viewer.

OBJECTIVES:

1. the course aims to explore the resources of the printed image (autographic, photographic and digital) targeting the production of a book.
2. the course aims to reconsider the work of artists from Edward Ruscha until today and to value the contribution of a radical new visuality.
3. Concepts such as paging, mapping, archiving, collection, encyclopaedia and hypertext. They are the elements that stand the context of this course with the ambition to develop a new product form containing its own way of seeing and hence make art.

PROPOSAL OF WORK accomplishment of a project concerning the artist book in the formalization and slope chosen inside the diversity that provokes the concept of book as visual container. Development of a prototype of the same .
